"God of War Ragnarök" Spoiler Free Game Review

God of War Ragnarök has easily taken the title as one of the BEST video games of all time. Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2022, this PlayStation exclusive has defined what exceptional gaming truly is.

The 2018 release of God of War set the bar high, for what seemed like an impossible reputation to exceed. With that said, God of War Ragnarök bypassed the gaming community’s expectations by leaps and bounds. This game features nothing but stunning visuals, and a narrative that is heart wrenching and inspiring across the board. Winning The Game Award for Best Narrative in 2022, it’s easy to see why its plot line is so revered.

Continuing with the story of Kratos and his young son Atreus, we follow these characters as they fight for what is good, and come in to their inevitable power, while dealing with the death of their wife/mother. With the goddess Freya staying true to her promise of killing Kratos in God of War (2018), Kratos and Atreus journey beyond their homeland while narrowly avoiding death the entire way. In this game we see many unexpected alliances, twists and turns beyond our imagination, character cameos that could have ever been anticipated, and an ending that is moving in so many capacities.

The actors for these characters have gone above and beyond in their roles, creating what nearly feels like a movie, most notably Christopher Judge who plays Kratos. Judge went on the win The Game Award for Best Performance in 2022, further solidifying his achievement as an incredible actor in the game. This game also features seamless transitions between action and cut-scenes, creating a gaming experience that feels like one endless shot; this ideally allows the player to feel as though they are actually there. The dedication to creating a story that impacts generations of gamers is evident in every aspect of God of War Ragnarök, from start to finish.

Watching Kratos develop as a character is one of the best aspects of this plot line. Seeing him go from a hard-edged god who believes his existence can only cause pain and suffering, to a softer version of himself that can see his ability to change the world in a positive way, is something that perfectly ties this story and his character to a satisfying finish.

To say you’re missing out if you haven’t played this game is an understatement, especially considering it has won six of the eleven nominations it had at The Game Awards in 2022. Overall, God of War Ragnarök is a captivating game, and a story that you wont want to miss out on.
